The difference between oceans, seas and billabongs | Did You Know?

We all know Australia is “girt by sea” … but if you want to be precise, it’s actually more girt by oceans.

The planet is about 70% water — and Australians should know that better than most. But there are some interesting rules for how bodies of water are named. What makes an ocean, and what defines a sea? What’s the different between a gulf and a bay? There are widely agreed upon naming conventions, but there are also plenty of interesting exceptions around the world.

One small correction, the earth isn't 70% water. The earths surface is covered 70% by water. But, water is only 0.02% of the earths total mass, most of it is rock.
