IS IT FAIR TO COMPARE A TRACTOR VS A SKID STEER? 🤔

We’ve been using our John Deere 333G skidsteer a lot lately, but most of you know us as a tractor channel. Heck, it’s in our name. So we thought we’d give you and overview comparison between skidsteers and tractors. Both have their strengths, both have their weaknesses. We cover the biggies in today’s video.

I run a business doing gravel driveways, grading, drainage issues etc. I use a tractor because the cost/ability of a skid steer doesn't outweigh the cost/ability of a tractor if you know what you're doing. There are so many things a tractor can do that a skid steer cannot. Best bang for buck? Tractor hands down.

Great video! We grew up running the big tractors on the family farm planting row crops. Never ran a skid steer on the farm though. Now I have a VENTRAC that I’ve been running here on The Lawn Care Life in Mowssouri YouTube Channel and it’s an unbelievable machine! Lots of different attachments for it and it will never tear up the ground you are working on. And it will go places that you can’t take a skid steer and tractor. I would love to have a skid steer someday though just for the lifting and mulching capabilities. Great video! New Subscriber to the channel. 👍

I think it comes down to 2 comparisons. 1, are you moving dirt or plowing and 2, are you running a business or working your own land. If you're running a business and moving dirt, skid steer every time. Cost is almost irrelevant as it's a tax write off. If you're working your own land, tractor 99% of the time because it's cheaper

In wet conditions a skidsteer doesn't have adequate ground clearance to do many jobs for me. I have a skidsteer, 97 hp row crop tractor (no loader) and I honestly would like a utility tractor with loader over the skidsteer. The skidsteer bottoms out way too much in wet and muddy conditions.

I bought a tractor, but would love to have a skid steer instead. However, I have a hill with boulders I seriously doubt a skid steer could safely navigate.

Teleskid! 😉 If I was going that route it is what I would get if possible. And yes, you can still get out of it when loaded on a trailer… folks get out of CARS loaded on trailers, right? 😉 But overall, yes, a tractor can be more versatile.

I use an ASV RT40 skid steer, Issue on this particular model is there is NO trailer hitch or integrated rear bumper, just beautiful thick fiberglass engine cover. Earlier versions of ASV had an integrated counter weight which served as a bumper with 2" receiver. One Mod I had to make. A light duty trailer hitch for pulling 400 pound (ish) stump grinder and shredder.

At those sizes with more available fund a skid steer is going to be more agile, powerful and capable. will handle higher hours and so much more. where i find tractors are under utilized are the small landscaping stuff. so many of our guys use small skidsteers with tires and not tracks. my best landscaper uses a sub compact tractor with turf tires and a mini ex. there is so much less lawn and property damage whereas the other guys are always down to their axles. the skidsteers are so small that their lift or fork capabilities arent that impressive to in my mind all of a sudden that tractor is much closer or preferable over that small skidsteer.

Weight and horsepower = ability to do more work. Skid steer also has a much larger bucket (and the power & weight to do the work). If you own a $70k trackloader, owning a trailer to carry it is nothing. If you are mowing a lawn, use a lawn mower, not a skid steer.

The lines have gotten really blurry between these two pieces of equipment, but I agree for most people they should invest into a tractor if they own a big piece of property. A tractor is meant for agricultural use, to care for property… For mowing grass and Tilling fields, and things like that. It’s great for pushing things around and I put a set of forks on to pick stuff up. Super versatile and hard to top for the price. We are very glad to have a midsize tractor.

One thing, I would encourage most people to never buy a tractor without a cab, I think you would regret it. There are exceptions, but most people I know that have bought a tractor with a cab wish they did not do it.

Now on the other hand with a skid steer there are all sorts of things you can do, and we actually own two of them, much older bobcat units from the 80s that we bought and fixed up… They are not these newer units that can run the big mulcher heads and such, but I’ve still been very useful for moving material and doing dirt work on the property. They do a lot of things more efficiently than the tractor, they move into a lot of places better than a tractor because they’re smaller and more nimble… And because we were able to pick these up cheap because they were old and needed some repairs, then it was a good investment. We don’t haul them all over the place so we didn’t have to invest into a trailer… And we don’t have an army full of attachments that we bought for them, just a bucket and a set of forks and for one of them an auger, but they are well worth having around for their utility. The front end loader on the 900 series can pick up easily what the tractors front end loader can handle and more.

I guess what I’m saying is they make a good combination for what we do. It would sure be nice to be able to afford to trade these older units on a fancy new skid steer, but we’ve never been able to justify the cost being as we’re not using them to make profit but just to keep up the land. But they sure are nice to have around.

if your looking to do more loader stuff then get a skid steer but if you want to pull a trailer or attachments like a woodchopper for your firewood or if you want to do more farming things then a tractor would be better for you but a tractor is all-around more useful also there are so many attachments for the tractor then skid steer

Very interesting video. I own a compact Kubota tractor (b series) , done in last year 400h. Initialy I only wanted this machine for my own land, but ended up doing garden services – mainly I create new lawns. As You can imagine, very important thing is to have the ground leveled. Currently I am using box blade, rakes and also my bukcet in float mode. I think that this is where the skeed steer can be much more better? I saw bobcat with power-rake in front – did amazing job on leveling the big area of dirt almost instantly. There was also an implement with laser grading. I think that this is the main area, where skeed steer beats any tractor?

If the bucket is mainly what you want, you want a skid steer. He talked about the visibility but maybe not enough, it's not even close. A skid steer you're on top of your work, in a front loader tractor you can barely see your work. That said, it's not nearly the only thing you do with a tractor. Skid steers don't pull trailers, they don't have a 3 point hitch, they don't have a PTO. They're a small payloader and that's basically it. If you're vacillating between the two, you probably want a skid steer and are underestimating how bad front loader tractors are in comparison. If you're planning on homesteading or food plotting or basically doing anything other than aggressively picking shit up, you already know you need a tractor.

Great video production and narration. Just so happens I was contemplating this very scenario.
I have 40 acres with approximately 30 acres of overgrown manzanita and many dead pines from beetles & drought here in CA. I live in the Sierra mountains at 4000 ft and sloping hills. I've rented skid steers and had a lot of issues with track derailment even though I greased the tracks and entire tractor before each use. I know the skid is not supposed to operate on a slooe sideways but come on that's not always possible. Not to mention the damage incurred from track derailment. Should I use steel tracks or will that derailment still occur? Then there's always the further risk of starting a fire from the sparks as the ground is rocky? Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated. Also thought about buying a used mulcher but I don't think it's a good idea as I don't have much experience with that implement. Maybe slightly used skid with a new mulcher? Idk. Also want a video comparison of mini ex vs track loader. What made you go from 32x to a 33?
