Well hello there distance learners look i think our video is actually working this time it's not cut off on the sides for reasons unknown uh sorry about that yesterday so what we're doing right now is we're actually answering these questions in our groups uh what's your favorite color what state .
If any were you born in and how many letters are in your full name you can answer them if you want to but i can't collect your data because there's not really a way for this to come in live i apologize but uh think about those and we'll show you what we're doing with them in just a second .
All right everybody can i get you back up here in five four three two one all right folks we're going to come back to this a little bit later for now let's open up our planners to page 96 happy u.s army appreciation day yay does anybody have for some family as .
Serving army members that's awesome they make sure oh that's awesome look at that like half of us that's way cool very cool guys give them a big hug today all right can i get you in five four three two one sadie what's our first essential question today .
Yes you got him what is the difference between quantitative guys i want you to write this down in your math notebooks or on your planner let's make sure our voices are off it's starting to get a little bit loud out there quantitative .
Q-u-a-n-t-i-t-a-t-i-v-e and qualitative data what's the difference between quantitative and qualitative data here let's trade that umbrella for one of these all right what's the difference between quantitative and qualitative data and let's see our second essential .
Question is going to come from karen what's our second essential question go ahead and stand up and take a closer look then that's totally fine stretch those legs a little bit how can i display some of that data we were actually just talking about this .
At lunch the teachers were about whether it's data or data and i actually brought in a book which shows uh a map of the united states and it says these are the places people say data and these are the places that people say data and what's funny is utah is like right in the middle between two of those uh .
The two zones that say data and data which is why we hear everybody say different things it's kind of like what do you guys call those little bugs that roll up into a ball yeah in utah most people call them early police but in washington we call them pill bugs .
And elsewhere they call them potato bugs and so it's a map of the u.s that's like here's what they call them pill bugs here's what they call them rolly police here's what they call them all those guys uh yes we're gonna go lower than haley oh if it's pecan or pecan yeah yeah yeah that i'll bet that is that book because .
It's the same idea haley it's true it's true we swallow our t's as they say all right so here we go guys let's underneath our warm up got a pencil i got a pencil today's topic is quantitative versus qualitative data so data is really just information you .
Can gather about a population for example the length of a groundhog the iq of an orangutan right these are things that you can measure about about a population and it turns out that those measurements come in quantitative and they come in qualitative uh types of information i'll tell you .
Right now if you look at these three questions two of them are qualitative and one of them is quantitative if all i'm telling you is that two of them are qualitative and one of them is quantitative who here thinks they know .
Which two go together and are qualitative and which one is different and it's quantitative why don't you guys talk it out if you had to guess which of these three questions is different from the other two and therefore quantitative .
Talk to each other take a guess teach you think the last one is different what makes it different i'll tell you that you're right you're correct what's that that is actually part of it if you'll believe it yes that is actually part of it you're .
Absolutely right i can't start that's very clever liz i like that a lot i'm a fan did you fill in the hall pass on the canvas uh okay okay can i get you in five four three two one i love that you guys were giving .
That a shot that was a great countdown i think you guys deserve a point oh there we go sorry i i i kind of missed let's try that again okay do i say it that was a great countdown from five and i love the way you guys work together i think you guys deserve a point .
Well done and i really liked lizzie's uh thoughts on this i thought lizzy had some really cool ideas on here so lizzy can you tell me which one did you think was the odd man out it it was number three how many letters are there in your full name how many of you figured that number three was the one .
That didn't belong it's true and what's funny is that lizzy was kind of grasping at straws like i don't know why they'd be different and then she took a guess and her guest was so close to exactly what i'm looking for that i wanted to say it again what was it lizzie it says what what how many .
The only thing i was you're missing all that was the how many it turns out the difference between quantitative and qualitative data is qualitative data might start with what quantitative data might start with how many so what do you think the difference is between a qualitative question .
What is your favorite color what state if any were you born in and a quantitative question how many letters are there in your full name teach teach yes mckenna yes yes yes you're on the right idea quantity i think is the word you're looking for .
Yes okay can i get you in five four three two one mckenna go ahead and say that again what was it that you makes you think that the third one is quantitative um yes yeah exactly how many how much something .
Like that and it turns out that's the difference got a pencil quantitative data is data you get by asking questions with number answers how many letters are in your full name .
The answer to that question's a number you know put a little star there because there's actually a weird one that we'll talk about in a minute qualitative data as questions where the num or the answer is a category right like it's uh it's it's it's not a .
Number okay so let's talk about the qualitative data so well you know what actually i want to do first let's make a table so let's make a table with qualitative on the left and quantitative on the right and here's what i want you to do when i say teach you're going to say okay .
At your tables guys i want everyone to come up with at least one qualitative question and at least one quantitative question so you can't use what's your favorite color what state if any were you born in and how many letters are in your full name but i want you guys to come up with a question that you could ask somebody .
And the answer is not a number that is qualitative and then i want you to come up with a different question you can answer and ask them so that the answer is a number quantitative talk to each other come up with a qualitative and a quantitative question for every table talk it out and .
Here we go t each that would be quantitative because it's a number the answer would be a number it could start with how many how much it could start with i think it always does i can't think of another way to ask it um .
um oh there's no need take another minute i like that one yeah it's also funny that's a funny question out of context like you're standing outside your house and there's like just filled to the gills there's like .
People hanging out of the windows there's so many in there and someone's like how many people are in your house and you're like ugh 532 don't get me started all righty everybody can i get you back in five four three two one let's see if i can get a little help .
Out there david can you give me a qualitative question what what's your favorite bagel flavor how many of us agree that's a qualitative qualitative also out of curiosity what's your favorite bagel flavor david oh that's the asiago like the burnt cheese on the top that one gets a little .
Too cheesy for me i'm boring i like honestly i love plain bagels i'm big on plain bagels i'm big on plain bagels let's see here can i get a little hand here karen can you give me a quantitative question oh quantitative so what is your favorite food would be qualitative .
Because the answer is not a number so qualitative by the way what is your favorite food sushi i love sushi my wife hates it so i never get to eat it my favorite food has got to be potatoes you can just do so much with potatoes but let's see if we can get quantitative what's in that what's a question where .
The answer would be a number karen how many pets do you have that is quantitative because it's the answer would be a number the answer is one we have one cat named charger one cat named charger we used to have two we had a fish named olaf but charger might have killed .
Him charger probably well charger did kill olaf i mean there's no let's not mince words here all right i want one more of each one more quantitative one more qualitative i would like a quantitative from lizzie can you give me a quantitative question oh quantitative .
Oh here's the problem guys i'm gonna tell you that's okay even though the answer to that question is a number i mean how many states are there in the u.s there's 50. so the problem is is that the data would just be 50. you know it would be a good one though you could change it by saying how many .
States do you think there are because then most people would say 50 but you know there's going to be people who are like 49 i don't recognize missouri i don't know why missouri they got a problem with missouri uh so that's what i would say by the way um well i mean how many .
States do you think there are 50 and same over here now we i want one more qualitative and i hope that i can get that from that's going to be jack can you give me a qualitative question what's your favorite movie uh what is your favorite movie jack inception that is a good one i .
Feel like boy my favorite movie changes all the time right now my favorite movie is oh i don't know i'm like i keep my brain keeps coming back to dread i think it might be dread for now but anyway okay so this is how we get quantitative .
And qualitative data and here's how we might be able to organize it let's go ahead and ask a qualitative question and get our information down so let's see what we got out there what is your favorite color me my favorite color it also changes but right now it's green .
Everybody write down green green that's me david what's your favorite color blue right down blue how about you quentin purple maddie layla pink how about you jessica .
Purple let's go for purple then we got our first repeat how about you mary purple all right you know purple is my daughter's favorite color too ailee yellow it's gonna be hard to see but we're gonna make it work how about you ruby .
Blue sadie which one's at the top of the list if you had to pick one right now then we'll go is one of them blue what's which one's the closest to blue what was it what are they i'm gonna go for uh black because you can actually see that because if i do white we're not gonna be able to see it .
Ah it counts jonathan yellow you guys are picking ones that are hard to see on purpose i do like yellow luis yellow let's see zelia orange hey we got our first orange you know what kind of rhymes with orange door hinge aiden how about you yellow we got .
Another yellow about you jake green hey welcome to the club how about you park green yeah yeah green just tied with purple karen how about you turquoise i think i have turquoise someone's like gotta change mine to .
Turquoise will how about you black all right how about you mia what's your favorite color rainbow uh well red comes first in a rainbow so we'll go red how about you catch what was it silver we'll go with gray let's see here how about you lizzy .
Turquoise let's see here that's going to take it too uh i keep always i always mess up your name and i know i know i'm not going to mess it isabelle there we go i keep you know what it is i keep i'm keeping like isabella isabelle and then it's gone .
Isabelle go ahead green yeah all right sienna blue and then we've got over here it looks like jacob red how about you mckenna blue oh don't call it a comeback how about you presley .
Pink how about you xavier black i like it look at that i like this this is a good good spread i dig it how about you lola red i like that because it even fits right here and that's going to take you to jack black .
And finally haley green okay can i get you guys back up here in five four three two 1 so here's our raw data so now what we're going to do is we're going to put that in what's called a bar graph which maybe you guys are .
Afraid of feeling pretty good about but let's go ahead and do that got a pencil let's make a bar graph you know i'm not going to put it in green because that's uh what was a picture what was something nobody picked brown uh let's see here it was a bar graph .
I like brown bar graph so the first thing you need to do on a bar graph the first thing we've got to do on a bar graph is we've got to make an axis going like this oops let's get that at a nice neutral brown i'm gonna access like this too .
And what we're gonna do is we're gonna put in all of our categories down here on the bottom so let's see here we got green blue purple red pink green blue purple red .
Pink yellow black orange gray turquoise yellow black orange gray turquoise did i get them all .
I believe i did now what i want you to do guys is i want you to look through wait uh what's your favorite color orange okay did i miss one nobody said brown but sophia did just say orange so we got another orange in there okay so i want you guys to look at your .
Raw data and find the color that showed up the most and tell me how many times it showed up go ahead guys find the color that showed up the most and tell me how many times it showed up teach teach go ahead let's get that hood down thank you .
Thank you yes okay can i get you guys back in five four three two one aiden which color showed up the most frequently it was a tie i think between yellow and green wasn't it and how many of each of those was there .
There's four which means we need to be able to say four there's one two three four here's what we're gonna do we're gonna build a bar that shows how many people said each one depending on what it was so for example .
There were four people that said green so we're gonna make a bar that is four high on green how many people said blue four blues also did five people say green one two three four oh there were five greens oh my goodness thank you thank you which means green .
Actually has to come all the way up to five and then blue was four go ahead guys will you fill in the rest of this please go ahead and fill in the rest of this with uh with bars to represent how many people said each of these so give it a shot and here we go teach .
I'll be doing the same thing i need to make my bars skinnier though yes thank you park one two two pinks i got four reds yeah i got four reds i think just one .
I counted four i know only one gray him magenta salmon off-white two people said turquoise uh the first turquoise i think was that uh .
Was no no no yours was red and maddie's was red who was the first turquoise carrion was turquoise and then lizzy also said turquoise that's right cool all right can i get you guys back in five four three two .
One so this is called a bar graph and you can use it to keep track of qualitative data but let's talk a little bit about quantitative data before we go so real quick look to your uh notes guys and let's see how many num how many letters are in your full name i have 20. .
I have 20. let's see how many you have hayley how many 30 for haley how about you jack yeah 14. lola hey guys i want to hear all this shh lola's 12 xavier 21 how about you presley 17. how about mckenna 17 how about you jake .
17. okay sienna 17. how do you like that oh 15. 15. isabel sorry guys i can't hear isabelle let's try to get through this quick because we got one more thing to do before we go isabelle's uh how many 18 and then lizzy 20 .
Hey hey how about you sophia please do 16. how about you cat 17 mia how many letters are in your full name go ahead and count them up we'll come back to you we'll come back to you okay yeah will eight eighteen eighteen .
Okay karen nine love it go ahead jake guys the record low i've ever had five five five they didn't have a middle name it's true 15 for jake how about you aidan 17. the record high was 96. celia it's true .
What was it zelia 23 yes go ahead louise 17. look at that guys let's go let's go john 20 sadie 15 ruby 20. guys we're writing this down yes writing this down writing this down it's all up here writing it down haley 16 .
Mary 17 16 how about you how about you jessica 23. that works layla 19 and then how about you maddie 20. and then quentin 20 and finally david i lied not finally finally mia 13. okay now folks i want you to talk to each other about why do you think that a .
Bar graph for qualitative data would be super annoying to make we guys talk to each other why do you think a bar graph for this would be annoying teach okay can i get you in five four three two one .
David say it again you said it perfectly you said it perfectly why would it be annoying voices guys i want to hear david why would it be annoying to make a bar graph for this there's so many numbers this gets even worse if you ask a different question like for example .
How tall are you right like think of all the different heights especially if we started being like 117.8 centimeters i'm 117.9 centimeters well we'll need a new category for that which is why we don't keep track of quality or quantitative data using a bar graph .
But rather use a got a pencil got a pencil a histogram a histogram guys we're running out of time please help a histogram works a lot like a bar graph but instead of making it so that this is all uh every single number gets its own .
Thing what we do is we make these little baskets we make these little baskets so for example what's the lowest number of letters that we have in this class nine and the highest is thirty so if i had to go from nine to thirty let's go ahead and say we'll start with nine and we'll go .
Up by fours that is the first basket's going to be people with nine to 13 letters in their name does that make sense the second basket is going to be 14 15 16 17 18. the next basket's going to be 19 19 20 21 22 to 22 then it'll be 23 23 24 25 22 26 .
And then it'll be 27 to 31 and that'll cover everybody let's look at the first basket how many people have 9 10 11 12 or 13 letters in their name count them up teach teach one two .
Three i got three so we go one two three four five hopefully this will be enough six seven eight i got three i got three people with nine to 13 letters in their name now we check 14 to 18. and honestly guys it might .
Help to cross them out as you go 14 to 18 1 2 3 4 5 6. seven eight holy nine ten eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen i got sixteen this doesn't get anywhere close to high enough this would have to go all the way .
Up to 16 to make it work i got 16. next baskets 19 to 22 one two three four five six seven eight i got eight twenty three to twenty six one two .
Two and 27 to 31 only one who had 30 letters in their name haley what is your full name my parents decided record i've ever had was uh five was the lowest and then 96 was the highest 96. she she had to she honestly like she .
Knew her name and her mom knew her name but nobody else could remember all 96 characters mm-hmm i i obviously don't remember it i'll tell you the lower one here but i don't want to put people's names on blast on recording
